Improve health 1-2 months prior
Being in optimal health will improve the chances of pregnancy success during IVF treatment. Ideally, a woman should start improving health habits at least 1-2 months before fertility treatment. Most women know that diet and exercise are essential for overall health. When considering fertility and reproductive health, women should focus on eating fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. While exercise is important, women should reduce overly strenuous activity, such as running, during an IVF cycle.
What if I don’t have 30 days?
Even if preparing for an IVF cycle 1 month in advance isn’t feasible, little changes still add up to make a big difference. Taking prenatal vitamins, reducing alcohol consumption, and managing stress in a healthful way can all make a difference in the success of IVF treatment.
Catch the right amount of ZZZs
Sleep and fertility are more connected than some people think. One study found that women who slept 7-8 hours per night were more likely to have a successful pregnancy than those who slept more or less. Because melatonin peaks between 9 p.m. and midnight, between 10-11 pm is considered an ideal bedtime. Some other tips to improve sleep habits include:
- Keep the bedroom around 65-67 degrees
- Avoid caffeine 4-6 hours before bedtime
- Limit screen time at least 30 minutes before bed, including tablets, TV, and smartphones
What about sex?
Part of the irony of IVF treatment is that doctors will often recommend against having sex for a few weeks surrounding treatment. Because a man’s sperm count can take a couple of days to rebound after ejaculation, experts advise refraining from sexual activity at least 4 days before sperm retrieval. Following the embryo transfer, sex can also interfere with implantation. Most physicians recommend avoiding sex for 1-2 weeks after an embryo transfer for the highest chances of success.
